Speed of Processing Phonological Information Presented Visually and Speechreading Proficiency

چکیده
An experiment was designed to investigate whether the speed of processing phonological information presented visually is related to speechreading proficiency even after the proportion of the variance associated with an analytical consonantal viseme recognition task was taken into consideration. Young adults (n = 48) with normal hearing and vision completed 4 different visual-speech perception tasks: (a) a sentence level speechreading test, (b) a visual-consonant recognition task with instructions to focus on optimizing performance level, (c) the same visual-consonant recognition task with instructions to respond as rapidly as possible to each test-item, and, (d) a visual-gating task. The mean response-time data and the results from the visual-gating task were significantly correlated to the performances on the sentence speechreading test, indicating that speed of processing at the phonological level is related to speechreading proficiency for sentences. Performance on the visual-gating task was a better predictor of speechreading performance than was response-time on the visemerecognition task. Finally, hierarchical regression analyses revealed that together both the ability to identify consonants presented visually-only and the speed at which this task is accomplished contribute significantly to explaining the variance in performance on the speechreading test of sentence-length material.

Comparison of informational vs. energetic masking effects on speechreading performance
The effects of two types of auditory distracters (steady-state noise vs. four-talker babble) on visual-only speechreading accuracy were tested against a baseline (silence) in 23 participants with above-average speechreading ability. Their task was to speechread high frequency Swedish words. They were asked to rate their own performance and effort, and report how distracting each type of auditor...
متن کاملComparison between two methods of extracting supplemental information for speechreading
A pilot study was made to examine the efficiency of two auditory processing methods extraction of fundamental frequency and spectral gravity, both combined with intensity information as a supplenient to speechreading. Three normal hearing subjects showed improved ability to perceive sentences with supplemental signals presented auditorily. For two experienced subjects, the performance without t...

This paper gives an overview of the research that we have carried out at Linköping University on cognitive aspects of visual speech processing. First, a cognitive, individual difference perspective on speechreading is introduced, with a specific emphasis on the cognitive architecture of speechreading skill. Second, common cognitive characteristics of exceptionally skilled speechreaders is descr...
متن کاملFast and Slow Readers of the Hebrew Language Show Divergence in Brain Response ∼200 ms Post Stimulus: An ERP Study
Higher N170 amplitudes to words and to faces were recently reported for faster readers of German. Since the shallow German orthography allows phonological recoding of single letters, the reported speed advantages might have their origin in especially well-developed visual processing skills of faster readers. In contrast to German, adult readers of Hebrew are forced to process letter chunks up t...
متن کاملThe Effects of Emotional Content on Phonological Processing in Children Who Stutter
Objectives: Stuttering and phonological processing are mutually related. Emotion is an effective factor in fluency and language processing; however, its underlying neural mechanism remains unclear. Event-Related Potential (ERP) is a non-invasive highly-beneficial method with high time resolution for language processing. The present study aimed to explore phonological processing in emotional wor...
